Paediatric Intensive Care (PIC) provides specialist and complex critical care to the most critically ill and injured children. As well as dealing with children with multi-system failure and following major trauma the PIC service also provides post-operative critical care for children who have undergone complex surgery.

PIC requires a large number of specialist staff including:

  • Paediatric Consultants in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Paediatric Medicine
  • Specialist nursing staff
  • Paediatric Surgeons
  • Paediatric ENT Surgeon
  • Hospital Dietician
  • Paediatric

In addition input may be needed from other specialties for example: Neuro, Cardiothoracic, Orthoapedic, Cardiologists, Haematologists, Microbiologists.

The specialist service is provided on a regional basis in the West Midlands by:

  • Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospitals North Staffordshire NHS Trust
  • University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for some Coventry and Warwickshire patients
