Improving patient care together

NHS logo

The vast majority of people who experience mental health problems will be able to receive appropriate treatment for their needs within local community services. Some people, however, have such serious or complex needs that these will best be met by specialised mental health services.

This includes specialist neuropsychiatry services provided to people who are suspected of suffering from a psychiatric disorder of organic cause. Disorders could include young onset dementia, psychoses (some of which are treatment resistant) and acquired brain injury.

Specialist teams are required for the assessment and management of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. Specialised services include access to specialist neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological assessment, intensive nursing care and community and hospital liaison.
