Improving patient care together

Burn injuries range from the most minor, often dealt with at an A&E Department or minor injuries clinic, to the most severe and devastating which will require specialist services.

The classification of a burn injury is based on:

The size of the burn injury.
Anatomical site of the injury.
Depth of the skin injury.
Presence of any co-existing conditions.
Patient care may be provided on an inpatient or outpatient basis and services required can include:

Surgical.
Nursing.
Physical therapy.
Specialist psychologists.
Social workers
Follow-up treatment can last for many years, particularly in the case of children, and may involve multiple outpatient interventions and several admissions to hospital for reconstructive surgery.

The West Midlands and East Midlands Specialised Commissioning Groups undertook a joint review of burns services in the East and West Midlands. The collaborative approach to burns care ensures that resources are utilised to achieve the best possible service for patients and their families.
